31/01/2012 - This is a Community Message from Thames Valley Police sent on behalf of the Director of the 2011 Census, Glen Watson.
Email Scam. We are aware that an email entitled 'Population Census: a message to everyone - act now' is being circulated, allegedly in the name of National Statistician, Jil Matheson. This email demands individuals provide further personal information, supposedly for the Census and threatens fines for non-compliance.
This email is a scam and a hoax. It has no connection whatsoever with the National Statistician, the 2011 Census or the Office for National Statistics.
We believe the links in the email could download malware to any computer where the user clicks on the links. This could put your personal data, including financial information, at risk.
Anyone receiving this, or similar emails, should delete them, not open any links and certainly not provide any information.
For more information on how to protect yourself from this type of threat, please see www.getsafeonline.org. If you wish to, please report receipt of any such suspicious emails to www.actionfraud.org.uk.
ONS takes the protection of personal census information extremely seriously. Collection of census data was completed last year and no further requests will be forthcoming from the Office for National Statistics relating to the 2011 Census.
Message Ends.

Conservation days on Shotover in 2012

Improvements to Shotover would not possible without the help of our many volunteers and there will be more opportunities to help in 2012. Oxford Conservation Volunteers will be organising two days in January and February to clear scrub from Mary Sadler's Field heath and to coppice a part of Brasenose Wood. Shotover Preservation Society has also arranged for scout troops to coppice in Brasenose.

Oxford Conservation Volunteers are running a couple of working parties in the coming months:
Sunday 22 January - Heathland Restoration (Mary Sadler's Field);
Sunday 26 February – Coppicing (Brasenose Wood).

Work starts at 10am and stay as long as you want. Bring a packed lunch, and wear old waterproof clothes and stout footwear, ideally safety boots. Tools, safety gear, and hot drinks and biscuits will be provided. There are pick-up points in town, on the Cowley Road and in St Giles.

In case of last-minute changes, it's best to email or phone in advance: email enquiries@ocv.org.uk, or ring Paul on 0777 9343847 for more general information.

Wheatley Windmill needs Volunteers!
In 2011, we are hoping to be able to run Wheatley Windmill to grind some grain at last. This will take place, with a bit of luck and wind, on one of the open days which are the afternoons of 15th May, 12th June, 10th July, 14th August, 11th September and 9th October. The three people who currently know how it works and can operate it safely all live in Buckinghamshire. In order to overcome the problem of availability, we are planning to train up some more volunteers on a weekend in March or April this year, so that the knowledge would be spread more widely. If you would be interested to learn this now rare skill, please give your contact details to Sally Humphrey. Please also let me know whether you are confident to climb a sail frame to put on or remove a sail, wearing appropriate safety gear of climbing helmet and harness, both of which we can lend you. (Climbing the sail frame will not be necessary for you to be able to help operate the windmill in other ways.) For your peace of mind, we have £10 million public liability in place, take health and safety seriously and have a comprehensive risk assessment in place. Please also note, you have to be over 18 to learn to operate the mill.
I look forward to hearing from anyone who is interested in taking part in operating this historic windmill or in helping the Windmill Preservation Society in any way (serving teas and cakes for instance). Thank you, Sally Humphrey - 01865 873860 - sally.humphrey@onetel.net.
April 2011 - Latest News from the Wheatley Windmill. See a brief progress report with photos of windmill volunteers at work.
